Vintage Vostok Russian Submarine Clock

£375.00 (inc VAT)

A genuine original vintage clockwork Russian submarine clock manufactured by Vostok in the 1980s.

These are beautifully designed, iconic collectible timepieces that have all but disappeared from circulation. The red Soviet star sits at the 12 o’clock mark, beneath which is Vostok’s submarine-at-sea emblem including the word ‘Komandirskie’, which is Vostok’s trademark. The curly B beneath the spindle is a Russian V, which stands for Vostok.

The hour and minute hands are original and painted black; the colour of the longer seconds hand matches that of the Soviet star.

The clock is wound by the clockwork key, supplied, inserted above the anchor icon. Either side of the anchor are the Russian words ‘sdelano v SSSR’, which translates as Made in USSRĀ  (the former Soviet Union – later versions show ‘sdelano v Rossiya’, manufactured after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991).

The clock has a 12-jewel movement and runs for seven days on a full wind (be careful not to over-wind).

These clocks were originally painted on-board submarine: usually a light blue-green or nearer khaki. Ours have been stripped and polished back to the shiny aluminium, though the original colour can often be glimpsed on the rear of the clock.

The clock is opened using the same key that winds it, given a quarter-turn of the key in the hole in the side, alongside the number 3. This accesses the hands and the winding hole.

Each Vostok Soviet submarine clock weighs 2 Kg with a diameter of 21 cm and a depth of 7.5 cm. The original clockwork mechanism and key are in place and the clock is fully working.
