As a vintage lighting shop, Christmas is one of our favourite times of the year – all those twinkling fairy lights! We’re suckers for those babies. And we’re very excited that it’s just over one week till the Fowey Christmas Market – one of Cornwall’s most celebrated Xmas markets.
Spread over five venues – Town Quay, Albert Quay, Webb Street, Town Hall and Leisure Centre – and almost 200 stalls – you’ll find handmade Cornish gifts, arts and craft, as well as some of the region’s finest locally produced food & drinks.
All against the backdrop of Fowey’s many wonderful independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. (We’re at 14 Lostwithiel Street, a minute’s walk up the hill from the main marquee.)
The weekend kicks off with Santa’s arrival by boat on Friday 30th, around 6.15pm at Berrills Yard, serenaded by Samba Kernow. Santa proceeds through town – led by the Fowey Town Band on a rare outing outside Regatta Week – with willow lanterns, made and held by local children. Then it’s the Grand Light Switch on and fireworks from 7pm, with carols from Fowey River Academy and music from the Jumping Out Jazz soloist on the Town Quay – plus a Children’s Disco in the Town Hall.
The main market (Town Quay, Albert Quay, Webb Street) is open from 5.30-8.30pm on Friday 30th, with many shops – from Any Old Lights right through to Fowey River Gallery – staying open late to enjoy the festivities in the town – look out for mulled wine, mince pies and other festive treats!
On Saturday and Sunday from 10am all venues are open. You can enjoy music from all female trio The Velvets, choirs Champagne Chorus, Looe Valley Singers, Fowey River Singers, and Playful Chorus, carols from St Austell Brass Band and acoustic singing from Truro’s Lucy Anna.
There’ll be kids’ activities in the Town Hall including face painting and ballet. And you’ll find the Supreme Dalek of Cornwall trundling around (not exterminating, in the spirit of the season) as well as Really Big Bubbles.
It’s a weekend not to be missed!
