Would you like to be more hygge? Pronounced ‘hue-gah’, this Danish lifestyle approach translates simply as ‘cosy contentment’ in English, and is sweeping the world of interior design.
And without knowing it, at Any Old Lights we’ve always been very hygge ourselves. We could write a lot about cosiness. Our vintage lighting shop is the oldest in Fowey. You can’t step through the door without sensing the hundreds of years of history in what used to be a resting place for pilgrims along The Saints Way from Padstow to Fowey, en route from Ireland to Europe. The sea used to lap right up against our front door before the land was reclaimed hundreds of years ago, and we are nestled at the foot of the church.
And our vintage marine and nautical lighting, which have weathered many storms, quite literally on ships at sea, have had a much needed purpose in their former lives, which many of our customers find compelling.
Yet our copper lighting in particular gives you a unique special warm glow, wherever you find it in the house. This super-sleek Davey-style spun copper ceiling light is exclusive to us and fantastic value for money (originals sell for nearly £400). And we’ve had them very subtly lacquered so they won’t tarnish.
Autumn and winter in Cornwall couldn’t be more hygge. Cosy pubs, roaring open fires – plus we are lucky enough to live in a supportive and sociable community, with great friends and family.
At Any Old Lights, we love nothing more than coming in after a bracing walk on the beach, curling up on big comfy sofa, with a mug of cocoa or glass of red wine with our favourite book or film .
When you go home tonight, light some candles, wrap yourself up in a blanket and drink a warming cup of hot chocolate. Or hot toddy. You’ll be hygge-ly before you know it!
